Arab-Israeli Question

In seminars you will focus on key stages in the historical development of the Palestine Question, usually based upon readings from a standard secondary source, primary sources and selected supplementary readings. Topics we will study include:

• nationalism
• the WWI peace settlements and the British Mandate
• 1948 and the birth of Israel
• Israel-Palestine as an international issue
• 1967 and the PLO
• occupation, settlements, rebellions
• Oslo and its aftermath
• present prospects.

Over the course of the term you should gain a sound understanding of the complexities of relations between the primary communities of Arabs and Israelis.
